I find myself doing the opposite. I drink so much NY state brew that I immediately expect Ontario's product to disappoint.

Yes, some of our local beer "criticism" can be pretty Pollyanna-ish when discussing hometown products. I must admit to being guilty of it myself sometimes - like when I'm reviewing stuff for RateBeer, my ratings for Ontario beers probably tend to skew higher than for similar out-of-province products. It's something I'll have to keep in mind for this blog.

I meant that there is a lot of rah-rah without the substance. The book would make you think every brewery is wonderful. It says somewhere that all the best brewers in Ontario are in the organization even though that is not the case (some real doubtful ones are in it, too, or at least not of the same quality). It is sort of an advertizing piece so I assumed it was paid for up front.

Is it fair of me to ask why is it bad in Canada to be critical in our analysis of our craft brewers? That is what springs to mind when I think of this book.

Alan

Yeah, it's not a perfect book by any means. As I said in my review, I found some of the brewery exclusions curious.

Not sure what you mean about it not being "truly independent", though. Does Perrie have industry connections I'm not aware of that could have coloured his coverage? Aside from the fact that he co-hosts a radio show with the PR guy from Cool, of course.

Definately some glaring typos in there, although I've sort of come to expect such things in small press books. It's almost quaint in a way.

I have this one with a couple other in the "somewhat dissapointed" pile which I plan to review as a group. I was not as pleased as I might have been if this had been a truly independent review of the brewers of the province.

And did you find the many typos odd? I am the worst speller in the work. I actually don't really spell that much. But I found it off putting.

[...and, no, the easlakeian way is not to flood weslakerian blogs with comment...]
